The Crater Assault Troops were named in a piece of early concept art and seen in the cinematic teaser, but have not yet been seen in the game. It's not known if they will appear as monsters to fight, or if they exist only as frightening visuals in the game's cinematic.

This name is likely a place holder, given for their purpose in the cinematic, and will not be their title in the game, if they do appear as regular monsters.

Baal's Armies

Concept art rendition.

The Crater Assault Troops appear to comprise Baal's armies, as they marched on the Barbarian cities during the events of the Diablo 2 Expansion. These events are (apparently) seen in flashback in the Diablo 3 opening cinematic.

As seen in the Diablo 3 cinematic, Baal's armies are blackening the plains before a mighty Barbarian city on the slopes of Mount Arreat. When Tyrael destroys the Worldstone within the mountain, it explodes, devastating Baal's armies on the surface and ending the invasion of the Barbarian land. Hence the name of these monsters, who are Baal's assault troops who were found on the crater left behind by Mount Arreat's destruction.

Disclaimer: It should be stressed that this is not official canon information, but is simply supposition and hypothesis based on cinematic scenes and the information Blizzard has released about the game plot.
