To obtain materials, players must visit the Blacksmith, click to his salvage tab, click the salvage button, and then use the salvage cursor to recycle their magical, rare, set, and legendary items.

Diablo 3 version 2 reworked and simplified the Diablo 3 vanilla materials system, with one common, one magic, two rare and one legendary item.

During much of the game's development, salvaging was handled with the Nephalem Cube, and interface object that allowed players to salvage anywhere, without returning to town. The Cube was removed along with the Stone of Recall and the Cauldron of Jordan in a major revamp of game systems late in the beta test. The ability to salvage "white" items was also removed at that time, along with the "white" quality materials.
+
In Reaper of Souls, a new tier of materials was added and in Patch 2.3, the lower tier was removed. The same patch added materials found only in Horadric Caches. Prior to Patch 2.0.6, legendary materials dropped from certain monsters and were used to craft items.

Material Types
There are three types of materials; blue (magical), yellow (rare), and orange (legendary). Each type is repeated on each of the four difficulty levels, with different names. Lower quality materials of a given type can be upgraded to the next level, at a 10 > 1 ratio, plus gold.

Salvaged materials
During much of the game's development, white materials made a fourth material type, the most common and low quality. These were removed, along with the ability to salvage white items, late in the beta test.
+
All these salvaged materials will also drop from monsters, chests, and especially from Treasure Goblins such as the Odious Hoarder.

* Rare (yellow): Veiled Crystal

* Legendary (orange) & Set (green): Forgotten Soul

Material Scarcity
+
Non-Salvaged Materials
Materials are color-coded to items, and have a similar level of scarcity. As of February 2012 (figures subject to change in later development):
+
Materials that drop directly from various sources and can not be obtained by salvaging items.

Blue (magical) items are very common in Diablo III, and when salvaged these will create a blue material of the appropriate difficulty level around 94% of the time, a rare material around 5% of the time, and a legendary around 1% of the time. Rare items create a rare material 95% of the time and a legendary material 5% of the time. Legendary items always produce 1 legendary material.
+
Death's Breath drop when Elite monsters are killed, and also from Golden Chests and Goblins. DBs are highly sought after as they are required on quantity for all sorts of high level gear crafting, as well as in most of the Kanai's Cube recipes.

It's not yet known where set items fit into these ratios. There are no set materials, and it's likely that set items will require legendary materials to craft, and will break down into legendary materials, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Nightmare materials can be created by upgrading Normal materials, Hell materials can be created by upgrading Nightmare materials, and Inferno materials can be created by upgrading Hell materials. All of those recipes require 10 of the lower quality material, plus gold, to create 1 of the higher level material.
+
Horadric Cache Materials. Introduced in Patch 2.3, these materials can only be obtained from the Horadric Caches awarded by Tyrael when a character completes all five bounties in a given act. Many legendary and set item crafting requires require one or more, and two of the most powerful Cube recipes require 1 or 5 each of all these materials, making their farming essential.

There is no way to upgrade blue materials into yellow, or yellow into legendary. There are no recipes to enable downgrading, say from Nightmare quality to Normal quality.

Legendary Materials were removed from the game in Patch 2.0.6. There were several dozen of these special legendary materials, each required for various legendary and set item crafting. As they only dropped from certain unique (purple) elites, they were quite hard to farm and were ultimately removed from the game and the crafting recipes rearranged. Even many patches later, players will still occasionally find an Adventurer's Journal from an in-game item, though this material no longer has any function in the game.

Removed White Materials
These white quality materials were all removed from the game late in the beta test. When active, one white material was always created from any salvage of any item. White items spawned one white material 94% of the time, a blue material 5% of the time, and a rare material 1% of the time.

Blue, yellow, set, and legendary items always created one white material when salvaged, plus a second material of the appropriately varying quality, as seen in the game today. These items never simply spawned two white materials when salvaged.

Death's Breath.

Materials have no function on their own, but they are required for many crafting and item modification activities, including enchanting, crafting weapons, armor, and jewelry, and cube recipes, and training Artisans.

Materials are salvaged from white, blue, yellow, and orange/green items, and can also be dropped directly by monsters, chests, and especially from Treasure Goblins.

Materials in Loot 2.0[edit | edit source]

Diablo 3 version 2 reworked and simplified the Diablo 3 vanilla materials system, with one common, one magic, two rare and one legendary item.

In Reaper of Souls, a new tier of materials was added and in Patch 2.3, the lower tier was removed. The same patch added materials found only in Horadric Caches. Prior to Patch 2.0.6, legendary materials dropped from certain monsters and were used to craft items.

Material Types[edit | edit source]

Salvaged materials[edit | edit source]

All these salvaged materials will also drop from monsters, chests, and especially from Treasure Goblins such as the Odious Hoarder.

Non-Salvaged Materials[edit | edit source]

Materials that drop directly from various sources and can not be obtained by salvaging items.

Death's Breath drop when Elite monsters are killed, and also from Golden Chests and Goblins. DBs are highly sought after as they are required on quantity for all sorts of high level gear crafting, as well as in most of the Kanai's Cube recipes.

Removed: Adventurer's Journal legendary material.

Converting Materials[edit | edit source]

White and Blue materials were perpetually in short supply until Patch 2.3 simplified crafting and increased their drop rate, while also enabling Treasure Goblins to drop large stacks of materials. Patch 2.4 further eased material shortages by adding the Cube recipe, Anger of Iben Fahd. It enables players to convert 100 stacks of white, blue, or yellow materials into each other, as needed.

See Material/Archive for details on the Diablo 3 Vanilla Materials.
