Training is the process of upgrading the Artisans. Each Artisan has ten skill levels, and as they increase in skill they gain new titles, learn new crafting recipes, and offer better items for sale.

Their appearance improves as well, with their wagons growing more elaborately-decorated, and more cool stuff appearing in their displays.

Training an Artisan is not free; each level requires progressively more materials and gold. Since the higher levels provide considerable benefits to the player, it's assumed they will be quite expensive to train, though no details have yet been revealed.

The Blacksmith

Training Haedrig from Apprentice.

Haedrig Eamon starts out as an Apprentice Blacksmith. To upgrade him to the next level, Journeyman Blacksmith, costs 250 gold as seen in the table below (or on Diablo 3's own website [1]). However the blacksmith also needs experience in each level. In the first level that costs 250 gold for each 20%. So upgrading a blacksmith to a fully learned apprentice blacksmith will cost a cumulative total of 1000 gold (the last 20% from 80 to 100 is leveling him to journeyman blacksmith). For each level the blacksmith increases, this price is increased 250 gold. In the later levels (from grandmaster and up) the price also includes Pages of Blacksmithing.
